Regency Columns
A set of 4 Regency columns, Ionic in the classic order, each with matching pilasters, dating from c. 1790.
These are constructed on a timber central spigot with horse-hair and lime-plaster. The columns were marbelised
to give the effect of an Italian marble, a common device from the period.
The 4 flat-faced pilasters have marble central panels set in the outer casing of horse-hair and lime-plaster. These
would be attached to the internal wall face with the circular column off-set into the room. They are intended for
internal use only.
This original set has come from the library at Westcroft Park, Chobham in Surrey and was removed before the
scheduled demolition of the whole building. There is a small amount of minor restoration work required for these
columns, e.g. where the plaster has been chipped in removal. The columns were originally set on plinth blocks and
are slightly tapered from the top to bottom.
It should be noted that to find original sets of columns is extremely unusual. Most architectural features of the
pre-Victorian era reside in listed buildings and are consequently protected. Westcroft Park was not however
listed since much of it had been re-modelled in the mid-seventies. This was before the integral value of original
internal features was universally recognised in the listing process for buildings of historic and architectural interest.
Fortunately, despite the re-modelling of Westcroft Park, some architectural features such as these survived.
